The Draft

It’s just eight days to go before the start of the PBA’s 38th season.

There will be 10 PBA ball clubs competing for three PBA titles this coming season.

And every start of the seasons, fans from all over the country also loom forward to seeing the rookies and how they would play against the resident veteran stars of the pro league.

Of course, all eyes will be on the 6’10” Cebuano big man, June Mar Fajardo, who emerged as this year’s top pick in the Annual Rookie Draft. Fajardo was picked first overall by Petron Blaze.

The Draft, or what we can call the D-Day!

It’s in the draft where rookies either realize their dream of a bright, financial future, or a perhaps, a busted basketball career later on.

PBA teams, long before the much-anticipated draft proceedings make extensive research on players they want to draft.

They go through the players’ collegiate profile, family background and his capabilities to play basketball—scoring, rebounding, defense and strong work ethics.

No wonder, aspiring pro basketball players cross their fingers come D-Day, especially if they are not the media favorite, because they don’t really know if they’ll be taken in by any team.

As I think of the PBA Draft, how many people among the more than 7 billion living in this planet are itching to get drafted in God’s winning team?

In God’s “draft” process, He doesn’t necessarily consider our talent, our stats, or our ability to produce. He’ll handpick us even in our “dirtiest” and sinful moment.

As God picks us up, He’ll cleanse us from our sinful past through Christ’s finished work on the cross, before giving us a new and far better life, than we used to live. And that’s what the Bible calls grace.

1 Peter 2:9 says, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

God’s drafted choice may not be the best and the brightest in the world, but they sure belong to Him because their purpose from there is to give God the praise and bring His light to this dark world.

Question: Are you part of God’s winning team? If you are now, who else among your circle of friends, needs to be part of God’s winning team?
