Taken

My wife and I watched Taken 2, a continuation of the film Taken, the 2008 French thriller produced by Luc Beeson and starring Irish actor Liam Neeson and Maggie Grace.

I feel Taken 2 is more predictable because the story line’s “revenge theme” gives movie watchers an idea of what will happen from start to end.

But comparing the two movies, I think Taken was more action-packed given the all-out attitude and the father’s love of former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operative Bryan Mills (portrayed by actor Liam Neeson) that drove him to save his daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) from human traffickers after being abducted in Paris. Thus the movie title Taken.

Bryan had to save his daughter within 96 hours or he won’t be able to track his daughter forever.

After watching the sequel, it reminds me of how every human has been taken as well, not by human traffickers, but by an ancient enemy called the devil.

It seems like in every news we hear today, man tries to blame the social ills to corruption or corrupt officials, poverty, drugs, crime, among others. Though all these socials ills point to the three-letter word: SIN.

The Message Bible translation aptly describes our sorry, helpless state in Romans 3, and how everyone has been taken as captive by sin.

11 There’s nobody living right, not even one, 11 nobody who knows the score, nobody alert for God. 12 They’ve all taken the wrong turn; they’ve all wandered down blind alleys. No one’s living right; I can’t find a single one. 13 Their throats are gaping graves, their tongues slick as mud slides. Every word they speak is tinged with poison…18 They never give God the time of day.

The Bible says we all are taking the road to destruction because every one has been marred by sin from the very beginning. Every word we speak, every action we take, every thought we make – all are done selflessly because we tend to value ourself more than God. As verse 18 says, They never give God the time of day.

But in the midst of man’s sorry, and seemingly hopeless state, God, in His infinite love, gave His Son Jesus, who risked His very life to could save us all from death (eternal separation from God).

Romans 3:24 (The Message) says, 24 God did it for us. Out of sheer generosity he put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we’re in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ. 25 God sacrificed Jesus on the altar of the world to clear that world of sin.

Through Christ’s sacrifice – His death on the cross, we are cleared of sin. We become spotless. We become blameless.

Through Christ, the “refresh button” has been pushed so we can now have the right start again.

Through Christ, He makes it possible for us to live in his rightness – Romans 3:26.

Only Christ’s saving work on the cross, only His redemptive work, can completely give us that fresh start.
