Meet The UE Red Warriors’ ‘Radical’ Player-Turned-Coach, Luis Palaganas

It would have been easy to just quit altogether when former UE Red Warrior Luis Palaganas suffered an ACL tear on his knee more than a year ago.

Luis, with former UE Red Warrior teammate Marcy Arellano, during the 2009 PBA Draft.

You see, every Filipino player shares a common dream of playing in the PBA, the country’s premier professional basketball league.

But a serious knee injury during a commercial league game dealt Luis a crushing blow to his playing career, who unknown to many, tried to find a place in the local basketball world after being left out in the cold during the 2009 PBA Rookie Draft.

Little did Luis know that God has something better in store for him.

Luis was the 2008 MY MVP winner, the basketball TV reality show of TV5.

Yes, Luis is semi-retired since that ACL tear on his knee, but looking at how things have shaped up, God radically turned that “painful episode” in his basketball career into something he never imagined before.

For one, while he religiously attended to his regular post-operation therapy with the help of his girlfriend Tet Soriano, he also delve into coaching, handling the First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH) in Tanauan City, Batangas.

Using the basketball know-how he acquired during his years playing under then UE coach Dindo Pumaren and commercial league, Luis steered FAITH to a runner-up finish in the United Calabarzon Collegiate League last year behind champion University of Batangas.

Since then, Luis’ coaching career began to flourish  after being tapped by UE to coach the Pages (juniors team) in the UAAP this season, while joining Derrick Pumaren’s coaching staff at the seniors level, the Red Warriors.

On the side, he also started the Building Champions Fitness Center in Batangas, partnering with his friend and former UP Fighting Maroon VJ Serios, where they envision it to be “the leading provider of power, fitness, and strength program in CALABARZON that will produce future athletic superstars.”

Through the LIFE group Luis and Ptr. Tito handles, they are basically setting up these college players for the real success, where they will ultimately learn to be secure in God and His plans for their lives.
