Lessons We Can Learn From Adducul

Romel Adducul used to be a dominant force in the shaded lane during his prime.

But the past three years, Adducul’s basketball skills have diminished, resulting to lesser playing time and basically, more time on the bench.

He has also transferred from Purefoods/B-Meg during the 2007 season to Powerade more than a year ago, which starting last August, became Global Port. Since Global Port bought the Coca-Cola franchise that used to own the Powerade Tigers.

He also considered 2008 till 2010 as the darkest chapters of his career and life, simply because of the health battle he waged against the stage 3 nasopharynx cancer.

Adducul was sharing to me yesterday afternoon (Sept. 12) after Global Port’s practice game against Air21 that his cancer battle was a terrible ordeal because of the chemotherapy and other treatment he had to go through.

But in those dark moments, he was thankful because he had his ever-supportive wife on his side (the former Dr. Joselyn Cobankiat) and above all, Jesus Christ.

“Blessing talaga itong makabalik pa ako sa basketball after nung battle ko sa cancer,” Adducul shared.

Adducul said he enjoys his new lifestyle – more fruits and vegetables, sleeping early and basically a stress-free life that includes his regular time with Jesus through prayer and God’s word.

He attends Victory Pioneer every Sunday with his wife and says, the sermon he hears ever weekend reinforces God’s word over his life and prepares him for the challenges he faces at present and in the future.

As one of the senior citizens (he’s 36 years old now) at Global Port, he wants to continue to set an example for his teammates as far as work ethics and the way he lives his life inside and outside the court is concerned.

He may just be shell of his old deadly self, but he believes character will always outlast talent or skill.

At the end of our talk, I just prayed for him and declared God’s Sovereign hand over his future and and his life.

Adducul may no longer be a dominant basketball player inside the court, but his desire to learn God’s word and live it out daily, is  what makes him a champion in God’s eyes.
