Lessons From Muggsy Bogues

Muggsy Bogues, the former NBA great, whose big heart far outweighs his size, is currently in town to lead foreign and local Jr. NBA coaches in conducting the Jr. NBA Philippines’ National Training Camp on April 26-28 at the UP Gym in Diliman and the SM Mall of Asia.

Bogues, who suited up for four teams during a 14-year career, is the shortest player to ever play in the NBA at five-feet-three-inches.

Despite his size, the 48-year-old Baltimore, Maryland native, never allowed his size  to prevent him from playing in the NBA, considered as the “land of the giants”.

muggsyHe first saw action for the Washington Bullets (now Wizards) during his first two seasons in 1987 to 1988 before shifting to the Charlotte Hornets when he was selected in the expansion draft.

Bogues never allowed his height to be an issue after establishing himself as an able court-general – facilitating the team’s offense, becoming a sultan of swipe and using his quickness to his advantage.

A product of Wake Forest University, Bogues played alongside then young stars Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson though he went on to become the Hornets’ career leader in minutes played (19,768), assists (5,557), steals (1,067), turnovers (1,118), and assists per 48 minutes (13.5).

Bogues may be a “midget” in the world of “giants”, “skyscrapers” and high-flyers. Yet, he was able to leave an indelible mark in the world’s most popular basketball league.

In life, we often feel “dwarfed” by circumstances – either struggling in sin, drowning in the ocean of despair, overcome by a feeling of hopelessness or perhaps, your relationship has become more and more complicated.

But whatever circumstances you are in, we can find strength and hope from what Jesus said in John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Jesus has overcome! And in your most abysmal moment in life, when no one seems to care, when you feel alone, Jesus gives this assurance that He is right beside you, knocking at the door of your heart, waiting for you to open your life completely to Him.

If you haven’t done so, go ahead, let Jesus in for in Him, we can experience life to the full. As John 10:10 (The Message) said –  “I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.”
