Sixteen years has been a long time since the PBA witnessed a grand slam coronation.
Alaska became the last PBA team to register the rare feat, actually just the fourth professional ball club to do the trick since Crispa (1976 and 1983) and San Miguel Beer (1989).
Bannered by the core of battle-tested veterans Johnny Abarrientos (the 1996 MVP), Jojo Lastimosa, Bong Hawkins and Poch Juinio, the Milkmen began their quest for the Grand Slam when they ruled the season-opening All-Filipino conference via a 4-1 Finals series triumph over perennial title contender Purefoods.
The Milkmen then continued their winning ways in the Commissioner’s Cup, beating Formula Shell in seven, gripping games in the Finals to nail their second straight PBA title.
Alaska went on to complete its mission in 1996 after subduing crowd favorite Ginebra in the Finals in five games, eventually cementing its place in PBA history as the most dominant squad of the decade.
Looking at Alaska’s amazing basketball feat, I’m sure everyone wants to be part of a winning team.
God wants us to be part of an unbeatable team as well.
King Solomon, the wisest king during his time, wrote in Ecclesiastes 4:12, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
Indeed, two are better than one because there is a better return for their labor.
But can you imagine having God on your side? When we let Him take the driver’s seat of our life, when we allow Him to lead us, to guide us in every area of our life, He promised to bring His plans to fruition.
As He said in Jeremiah 29:11, “…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
