About Richard

11750623_1065454373474580_3609275719362425207_nRichard is a veteran Filipino sportswriter, who currently works as a Senior Reporter for FOX Sports. 

Formerly a sports contributor for Philstar and Senior Staff Writer at Spin.ph, Richard has written over 10,000 sports articles since starting as a stringer and eventually, sports reporter for the Manila Times (in 1997), one of the country’s oldest newspapers. He has also worked for the Daily Tribune and the Manila Bulletin.

Richard later on, served as a campus missionary and local pastor from 2002-2012 at Victory U-Belt before eventually returning to sports writing.

Aside from writing, Richard is also into public speaking, touching on topics in journalism as well as leadership and values with the main goal of contributing positive life change.

Since starting as a sports writer in 1997, Richard has covered various sports beats from basketball (the now defunct Philippine Basketball League, UAAP & NCAA as well as the PBA). He has also covered other sports like volleyball, table tennis, tennis, bowling, triathlon, track and field and has written numerous feature stories on various sports teams and athletes.

Richard has also served as a resource speaker and has done writing workshops from 1999 to 2001 via the Varsitarian’s Inkblots, the annual writing workshop it sponsors. The Varsitarian, where Richard also served as one of the sports staff writers during his college days, is the official student publication of the University of Santo Tomas.

He is currently the PBA Press Corps’ treasurer and has helped spearhead the sports scribes’ Journalism Seminar and Workshop for state-run college students, starting in 2014.

Richard also has a give-back program of his own, where he teaches journalism to grade school students. In recent years, he has taught grade school students from Dr. Alejandro Albert Elementary School in Sampaloc, Manila and M. Hizon Elementary School in Abad Santos, Tondo, Manila.

In August 2014, he and his wife, Ava founded iWRITE, a non-technical writing seminar and workshop.

iWRITE aims to inspire people to write positive and encouraging topics via social media. And these people who have been inspired to write, will also write so they can inspire others.

Richard has also served as a speaker in various universities like UST, University of the East, Arellano University, St. Paul University (Malate), Far Eastern University (basketball, volleyball and taekwondo teams), Lyceum of the Philippine University, University of Perpetual Help-Rizal, Chiang Kai Shek College, Mapua Institute of Technology and high school – Lorenzo Ruiz Academy, Arellano High (Sta. Cruz, Manila), Chiang Kai Shek High and Ramon Magsaysay High (Espana) – ranging from topics on leadership, integrity, purpose, vision, faith in God and sports writing.
